Battle of the Preselau Traditional Cache

This is an easy cache that takes you to the newly unveiled memorial to the ‘Battle of the Preselau’. It is also a very popular starting point for the Preseli range or ‘Golden Road’ and the direct access to the summit of Foel Drygan.
Much of the area is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest which explains why I haven’t made you climb to the summit to retrieve a cache – it’s still worth the walk though!
The plaque commemorates the struggle and success of the local community to repel the Government’s plans to turn the Preselau hills and surrounding area (some 16,000 acres) into a permanent military training zone in November 1946.
British and American soldiers had already been welcomed to the area for long periods during the 1939 –1945 war but having them stay on a permanent basis threatened a way of life – Welsh communities would become garrison villages and the Preseli hills steeped in history and covered in ancient monuments would be despoiled.
A vigorous, well-organised two-year campaign, led by Nonconformist ministers and headmasters, eventually forced the government to change their minds and the Preseli hills were safe.
Battle of the Preselau
(translated from the Welsh ‘Brwydr y Preselau’)
Cadwn y mur rhag y bwystfil
Cadwn y ffynnon rhag y baw
Keep the ramparts from the beast
Keep the fountain free from grime
Waldo Williams, Y Faner 20/11/1946
