The cache is located in a layby on the A487 a few miles south of Aberystwyth and near the village of Llanrhystud. Located in the layby is a piece of protest graffiti stating ‘Cofiwch Dryweryn’ (– Remember Treweryn) commemorating the flooding of the Tryweryn Valley in Snowdonia, which drowned the village of Capel Celyn and displaced its inhabitants. The graffiti is an important cultural landmark and well known in Wales.
The cache is a small container attached by a magnet.
Note: the cache is a little close to the road for geokids!
The history lesson:
The home-made memorial to the flooding of a village and a valley in the 1960s in order to create a reservoir that would supply English city-dwellers, and the campaign against the project is an important cultural landmark and well known in Wales.
It was not the only such case during the 1960s, but it is probably now the best known. The widespread outrage caused in Wales by the reservoirs contributed to the growth of Plaid Cymru and the Welsh nationalist movement and ultimately to a shift in political power from London to Cardiff.
It was initially painted in white as 'Cofiwch Tryweryn' in 1963 or thereabouts on a broken down farmhouse stone wall. It has subsequently been recrafted many times until today’s image has the words 'Cofiwch Dryweryn' in red on a white background, complete with the Cymdeithas yr Iaith’s dragon tongue symbol beneath.
The old crumbling wall has recently been awarded a £30,000 Welsh Assembly Government grant. The Llanrhystud Community Council has launched an appeal to raise £80,000 to buy the wall and the land around it in order to preserve the landmark. It says the graffiti, perhaps the most famous in Wales, is a “last symbol” of the 1960s campaign to prevent the flooding of the valley to supply water to Liverpool.
