Going Deep in Cavalier Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

offline.cacher: On Sept 2, 2010, Jim Bowman, Wildlife Biologist Manager for the Virginia Wildlife Management Areas sent me this email...

"Thank you for your inquiry. Virginia's wildlife management areas (WMA) were purchased using funds derived from hunting, fishing and trapping licenses, as well as contributions made by the Federal Assistance in Wildlife Restoration Program. As such, WMAs have been purchased and are managed for the purposes of habitat management and production of wildlife. Certain wildlife-related recreational acitvities are consistent and compatible with this objective, but not all outdoor recreation can be accomodated. As geocaching is not related to, nor does it support wildlife or habitat management, this activity is not allowed on our WMAs."

Unfortunately, this cache will have to be moved from the area.

Geocache Description:

A hiking or biking cache in Cavalier Wildlife Management Area.

The Cavalier WMA consists of 3800 acres between Ballyhack Road and the North Carolina border.  There are 2 parking area and many miles of smooth trails in Cavalier. The southern parking lot is currently inaccessible due to a cave-in on the main road.

The route to this cache is about 4.5 miles each way.  Head south on the main road from the parking area for 2 miles then turn east (left) and follow this road for 2.5 miles to the cache.  The first section of the road is fairly smooth and can be easily ridden on a bike. Watch out for the cave-in about ½ mile south of the parking area.  The second part of the trail is a dirt road that can be very slippery when wet.  Use caution when riding on this road.

Cavalier WMA is first and foremost a hunting area.  Please cache with care during hunting season and be respectful to the hunters.  Check the DGIF website for hunting season dates.  Deer hunting season was in October and November in 2009, but small game hunting continues on until February 2010.  I would not recommend caching in this area during deer hunting season because the cache site is visible from several hunting stands.

There is an abundance of wildlife that can be seen in this area.  I observed the signs of several bears while placing the cache.

Congratulations to Frogmen83 for the FTF.
