An easy find to take you someplace interesting you probably havn't been.
Tondoon creek was named by Francis MacCabe the initial surveyor of Gladstone in 1853. The dam was built in 1916 to supplement the Railway dam which together with another small dam near Auckland street were proving inadequate.. It fell into disuse after a reliable water supply was established from the Boyne river during the war years. Marion McDonald, a local nursery woman, enlisted the help of several local groups to campaign for an area to be set aside for a botanic gardens the Tondoon dam site was chosen. They were developed during the early 1980’s and officially opened in 1988.
An enjoyable walk from the parking lot especially early in the morning when there is usually many feeding wallabies and scores of water birds.
