Geocache Description:

Dodd~Ford Bridge

This location is home to an old abandoned bridge crossing the Blue Earth River. Known as the Dodd~Ford Bridge #1461, it was built and opened in 1901. It is a steel suspension bridge using a Pratt-truss design, and is one of only two such bridges still standing in the state. Limited to a 3-ton load for the last thirty years, the one-lane wooden-decked structure was finally closed in May of 2009. Preservation efforts have been undertaken, and the bridge was recently listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

This is a very peaceful and quiet spot, you should be able to look for this cache with no interruptions. Take the paved road from the east or the gravel road from the west to get here. Please ensure cache is replaced as found.

Update - August 14, 2016: Preservation of this historic bridge is complete. It is once again open to vehicular traffic, one lane only. There are parking spots for one or two cars on both sides of the bridge. A new cache is back in place, larger micro in size containing a logsheet and pencil. This is still a tranquil location and it's interesting to see the work done to preserve this unique structure for many years to come. As Neil said, "it's better to burn out than to rust away".
