Maronia

The ancient city of Maronia stood on the coast, on the site of the modern village of Agios Haralambos with its picturesque little harbour. Legend sais that it was founded by King Maron, a priest of Apollo who dwelt amidst the verdure of the god's sacred grove. In the seventh century BC, colonists from Chios arrived in the area and the city became an important commercial centre until it was taken by the Persians in 513 BC. The First Athenian Confederacy's tax registers for 478/7 mention Maronia's contribution of one talent and 3,000 drachmas. As the city 's economic development surged, so its contribution increased, until by 437 BC it was paying three talents. In the Roman period it experienced renewed economic and cultural prosperity, which continued until early Christian times.

Marmaritsa

Right before the village of Agios Charalambos turn left and continuing along the dirt road, you will find the ancient theatre on the right-hand side. Continuing your journey, you will come to the impressive site of the ancient marble quarries, from which modern Marmaritsa probably took its name ("marmaro" being the modern Greek word for "marble"). One can still see where the vast blocks were extracted; the cavities they left give the place the air of a surreal landscape.

At the Waypoint 1 the road turns left, continuing to the beach. Park here and go right until you find the cache.

Μαρώνεια

Η αρχαία πόλη της Μαρώνειας βρισκόταν παραλιακά, στην περιοχή όπου βρίσκεται σήμερα ο οικισμός του Αγίου Χαραλάμπου με το γραφικό λιμανάκι του. Ιδρυτής της, κατά την παράδοση, θεωρείται ο Βασιλιάς Μάρωνας, ιερέας του θεού Απόλλωνα που κατοικούσε στο κατάφυτο ιερό άλσος του θεού. Τον 7ο αι. π.Χ. έφτασαν στην περιοχή Χίοι άποικοι και η πόλη έγινε αξιόλογο εμπορικό κέντρο μέχρι την κατάληψη της από τους Πέρσες στα 513 π.Χ. Στη ρωμαϊκή περίοδο γνώρισε νέα οικονομική και πολιτιστική ακμή, που διατηρήθηκε έως τα παλαιοχριστιανικά χρόνια.

Μαρμαρίτσα

Ακριβώς πριν τον Άγιο Χαράλαμπο στρίψτε αριστερά και συνεχίζοντας τη διαδρομή, στα δεξιά του χωματόδρομου θα δείτε το αρχαίο θέατρο. Συνεχίζοντας θα φτάσετε στον εντυπωσιακό χώρο των αρχαίων λατομείων, απ’ όπου πιθανόν και η σημερινή ονομασία Μαρμαρίτσα. Διακρίνονται ακόμη τα σημεία απ’ όπου έχουν εξαχθεί οι όγκοι των μαρμάρων. Οι κόγχες που έμειναν δίνουν την αίσθηση εξωπραγματικού τοπίου.

Η Κρύπτη

Στο Σημείο 1 ο δρόμος στρίβει αριστερά συνεχίζοντας για παραλία. Παρκάρετε σε αυτό το σημείο και κατευθυνθείτε δεξιά μέχρι να βρείτε την κρύπτη.
