In 1637, King Charles I and Archbishop Laud forced on Scotland the religious service of the Church of England. Such was the stubborn spirit of the scots to have yet another English act thrown upon them that riots began, an order came from King Charles to enforce the new prayers. By 1638 95% of the scots signed a document called 'The National Covenant', by which they bound themselves to a kingdom free from all interference in church matters. In 1639 Charles marched with a army, and war seemed imminent, but after much talking on both sides peace was declared, and known as 'Pacification of Berwick'. But scots being scots they mobilised an army and started to gather stores and weapons, this was probably one of the last times that bows and arrows were used in war fare 'apart from Little Big Horn'. So in 1640 under the command of General Leslie, 28,000 scots marched South and it is this area right down to the banks of the Tyne that they defeated 3,000 english under the command of Conway,they then marched on Newcastle town where as the TOON ARMY soon gave up
