Situated in the front range mountains of Coachella Valley.
Coyote BM (2,613 ft) dominates the western skyline of La Quinta Cove. There are several approaches, all strenuous. The direct northeast face is rather adventurous to recommend. It may be more pleasant to follow a use trail to the saddle north and then climb the ridge to the benchmark.
The summit and saddle are visible from the Cove Oasis trailhead. Cross below the spillway of the debris basin. Pick up the trail west. Reach a newly signed trail fork at N33 38.954, W116 19.539. Left leads to a tall dry canyon waterfall ("Original Trail"). Bear right to the distant saddle ("Later Trail"). The distinct, well-ducked path stays on the left bench of the wash to the saddle. Here scramble cross-country south on the ridge through boulders to the summit. Note the last several hundred feet are quite steep. The terrain rating is accurate. Be safe, have fun, and enjoy the adventure.
I placed this cache on the summit plateau. Contains a log, pen and several find prizes that hopefully are not required for the descent.
