Geocache Description:

A quick cemetery cache

This is a micro cache located in Gilbert Cemetery. The Gilbert Cemetery is a small, neighborhood cemetery on the south side of Pleasant Valley Road in the Town of Onondaga, halfway between Marcellus and Cedarvale. The cemetery was originally on the north side of Pleasant Valley Road, where it intersects with Kasson Road. Because the site was low and wet, however, it was decided to move the bodies which could be moved, to the present location, on land given for the purpose by Ichabod Gilbert and either the Whites or Capt. Terry. Besides some bodies probably remaining on the original site, it is certain that the present cemetery includes many unmarked graves, for it is said to be full. Thus many early burials will never be accounted for.There is a New York State historical marker that says it is the burial site of many early settlers of the area. Mal & Jeff found this site while driving around one day and we decided it would be the location of our first hidden cache. We recommend pulling up on the side of the road and putting your hazards on. It's a pretty quiet road and it won't take long.

Some of the Action Squad's favorite caches are in cemeteries and we like to share some of the unique ones that we find. It's nice to see the stones of our ancestors, and we want to remind you to be respectful of the area and to please only do this cache during daylight. Enjoy!
