Quick cache and dash for a 35mm film pot. Please bring a pen. Watch out for muggles and cars as it is located near a road. There's a small pull-in alongside where you can reverse, or if you're visiting the Fruit Farm they have a large car park.
This cache is not far from the Brogdale Farm National Fruit Collection.
Notable for being one of the largest fruit collections in the world it hosts almost 4,000 named Apple, Pear, Plum, Cherry, Bush fruit, Vine and Cob Nut cultivars. It is where the UK's gene-bank of all known varieties of top-fruit is maintained. Although scientifically of great importance it is also of great interest to amateur gardeners the world over; indeed, their website has comprehensive data and photos of almost 2000 of its different apple varieties!
All the fruit is owned by the Department of the Environment and looked after by the University of Reading. However, the farm is open throughout the year for tours & tasting events. Brogdale was chosen as the home of this collection because it stands in the middle of what is called the Kent ‘fruit belt’, where both the soil and the climate is ideal for growing top-fruit. Winter frosts are rare, because of its proximity to the sea.
Perhaps because of this ideal situation the farm is also noteworthy for recording Britain's highest temperature. On August 10th 2003 its equipment recorded a scorchingly hot and still unbeaten 101 degrees Farenheit (38.5 Centigrade).
