East Germans in Hungary 1989 Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Munkyl: The place is still interesting to visit. However, the location is not suitable any more to hide a cache in a fancy way. Also the cache has got lost too often, so I decided to archive it - history is still there.

Geocache Description:

The cache itself is near a memorial table which commemorates the events in 1989, when the Eastern or Soviet Block countries transformed into western type democracies. One of the important events of the age was the fall of the Iron Curtain. The street is in a quiet residential area, but there may be some traffic and passers-by.

East Germans in Hungary 1989
The monument of welcoming

The name of this cache comes from the Bible (“I was a stranger and you welcomed me”; Matthew 25:35) and refers to the events of summer 1989, when thousands of citizens from the GDR (East Germany) escaped to Austria (and subsequently to West Germany) in their desperate want for freedom. Since citizens of the GDR were allowed to travel to former Eastern Block countries, many of them had sought and taken refuge in Hungary before the Hungarian government decided to allow them to leave the country and enter Austria. The yard (surrounding the church of the Maltese Order) near the given coordinates gave shelter to those thousands of refugees who had been waiting for this historical moment.

There are two memorial tablets, one in German and one in Hungarian, and they read: “Between 14 August and 14 November 1989 – halfway to their journey towards the free half of Germany – Germans escaping from the fallen idea – found shelter in the camp of the Hungarian Maltese Charity Service in the yard around Zugligeti Holy Family Church (Szent Család Plébániatemplom).”
The two blocks of the (original) Berlin Wall are also memories of bygone days.

Don’t miss having a look at the symbolic East German car, the famous Trabant (despised and loved by many!) exhibited in the garden of The House of Welcoming, decorated in a way that reminds the spectator of those days!

You may want to have a ride to János-hegy (the highest elevation in Budapest) on the nearby chairlift (Libego), which is an approximately 10-minute walk from this point. It’s fun and the views are worth the ride.

Enjoy this cache!

27.11.2011: The cache has been re-deployed. Hopefully it will survive long. Bring your own pen. Enjoy the quest!

A kertben a berlini fal két eredeti darabja emlékeztet a múlt korok eseményeire. A mellette kiállított, sajátosan átfestett jármu is figyelemreméltó mementó.

A környéken sok egyéb programot ajánlhatok. Jó szórakozást kívánok a libegozéshez, kiránduláshoz stb.

2011.11. 27: A ládát ismét kihelyeztem, remélem, legalább a következo nagytakarításig megmarad.
