Old Onslow was founded as a port to serve the hinterland pastoral industry and soon became a base for the pearling luggers. The town was offically gazetted in 1885. The town was named after the Honorable Alexander Campbell Onslow, Chief Justice of the colony of WA who was Acting Governor at the time. The police complex which can be seen today, was not built until 1891 and included the goal, court house and staff quarters. On-going difficulties in obaining a reliable supply of good water led to the eventual construction of a large underground storage tank which still remains near the police complex.
Successive cyclones not only damaged the rebuilt jetties but caused the build up of sandbars, which created obstacles in the shipping channel. It was decided to develop a deep-water port at Beadon Point further eastwards. Construction of the new jetty was completed in 1925 and the town of Onslow re-established at Beadon Bay.
It is approx 45 km drive from Onslow along an easy, maybe a bit boggy track. There are some nice camping sites nearby at the Ashburton River which you can fish for barramundi!
The cache is hidden in the Police Complex. It is a small sistema with logbook, pencil and a sharpener.
Congratulations to theduck.org on the First to Find and first cache to find as well!!
