Geocache Description:

Matarangi Bluff Cache.

The Iles d'Haussez are another name for the Mercury Islands. Captain James Cook named the islands Mercury Islands, as he observed the Transit of Mercury from Cook's Beach in 1769. The French explorer Dumont d’Urville, who came to New Zealand, named the islands Iles d’Haussez.

Just the spot for the 'Pirates of the Mercury Islands' to hide treasure. They never existed but they would have definitely buried their treasure here if they did!!

This cache is in a secluded cove between Matarangi Beach and Rings Beach. You are looking for a Ammo Box. The terrain requires you to rock hop but should not be too difficult.

The Bluff Rd is narrow gravel Rd and during summer months can get busy. I suggest that you park at the eastern end of Matarangi Beach and walk round the road, especially during the busy periods.

Just imagine the Pirates here. Let me know what you think.

Access the beach via the track.
