Geocache Description:

The cache is a 200ml container, small enough for a few exchanges and small travel bugs. The cache is suitably camouflaged in the way geocachers will be accustomed. The ground area is uneven and you need to be careful with small children or if it is wet or dark.

This is the site of the Red Lion Hotel on the western side of the Raywood Road, near the Woodvale Farm Machinery. The Red Lion Hotel was a gold rush hotel that was active in the 1860s, when there was a house and brick hotel on the site.

The hotel was operated by Daniel Boyle, who is the father of Australian test cricketer Henry (Harry) Boyle. Harry was a played test cricket for Australia in the late 1870s and early 1880s and was said to be a particularly effective medium pace bowler and played in the first Test ever held in Melbourne in 1877. Harry had the distinction of playing cricket with the three earliest Australian teams visiting England in 1878, 1880 and 1882 – a big commitment given the boat trip lasted 48 days, each way. Boyle was part of the Australia team’s victory over the English in 1882, which resulted in the Ashes (in remembrance of the first time an England side had lost a test match in England).

The site is marked today by a large blue-leaved cactus-like Agave Americana. This plant is from Mexico and produces a giant 8m high spike of yellow flowers - you can see the old flower spike on the ground near the plant.
