This is outside a working farm/ranch that was part of the original Harrison Barrett property. Some of the old farm implements can be seen to the right. The monument is on the access road to Hwy 90 so you can drive and park right next to it. Be careful, as fire ants and snakes sometimes like to visit the site. Please return geocache as found.
This is a 5.56 mm ammo can. It is an easy find. This is a Travel Bug Motel. Since this is a large ammo can, please feel free to drop off a TB on your travels. There is a Texas Historical Marker here that tells about the history of Barrett Station, Texas. Before 1823, the area near and around the current Barrett Station/Crosby was inhabited by Cherokee Indians mainly because of the artesian springs and the good hunting located in the area. Oxen team caravan drivers from East Texas knew of the springs and the good hunting and stopped to camp. Campers nicknamed the area around the springs "Lick Skillet" because the food was so good cooked in the skillets that they were able to lick their skillets clean. The community of "Lick Skillet" was settled by two of Steven F. Austin's "Old 300" Colonists, Humphrey Jackson and Ruben White in 1823. The name of "Crosby" was given to the community north of Hwy. 90 when the railroad went through in 1860. Harrison Barrett, a former slave, purchased 400 acres, plus or minus, from Ruben White in 1875. Harrison, realizing that the amount of labor he was willing to expend to achieve a brighter future was unlimited, built a sawmill on the San Jacinto River and the community south of Hwy. 90 was called "Barrett Station". The local area was involved in ranching and farming, especially cotton and rice. Early settlers included the Swedes and the Czechs. Today, Barrett Station/Crosby is known for its churches, football and sod grass. The pond in front of you, on the property, is still being fed by one of those artesian springs.
