SH6 Gibbston Valley
There are several points of entry. The safest is to pull off SH6 and park at the entrance to the "school grounds". Traveling towards Queenstown the entrance is just before the blue sign with information about the i site a little further on. Your GPS will lead you from here.
There is a wealth of information, including photographs, about the site on the information panels at the rest area, approximately 1 km west towards Queenstown.
The building was the centre of social activity for the Gibbston Valley. Records show one local was baptised within, married at the same spot and after her death her funeral service was held here - no, you are not visiting a church!
The shady grounds feature Oak and enormous Wellingtonia trees.
Tucked into the hillside 200m behind the school and clearly visible, is an old stone cottage. Built in the 1880's from local materials, particularly schist rock from the nearby quarry, the cottage was home to the sole-charge teacher.
The cache is a 500ml camouflaged container. When placed it contained the usual things including plenty of trading items.
