Geocache Description:

Nano in Alabama's oldest county

Look around you and take in the booming metropolis that is Calvert, Alabama. Although I live elsewhere now, this is my hometown. I grew up here, my mother still lives here and just behind the Methodist church across the highway, I have grandparents and at least two prior generations beyond buried here.

And compared to what I grew up with, this does seem to be a boomtown today. The ThyssenKrupp steel processing plant is one of the largest construction projects in the US and various construction related businesses have sprung up, either taking over or replacing the homes and smaller businesses that once dotted the highway.

Why, it has even brought an overpass and caution light into Calvert! Of course, it also took over the dead end road and dirt road that I so often traveled by bicycle to go to the Tombigbee River, but that’s progress for you.

The county line separating Mobile from Washington counties runs through Calvert, as well. This cache sits close to the line on the Washington County side welcoming you to Alabama’s first and oldest county.
