Geocache Description:

This cache is teamCull's 100th cache hide.

This cache is dedicated, in part, to the author Joan Lowery Nixon (1927-2003). She wrote mystery novels for adolescents. In many of her books, the main character was a teenage girl. The setting of many of these books was here in Houston. She wrote great mysteries such as, "The Kidnapping of Christina Lattimore," "A Deadly Game of Magic," and "Nobody's There." Her final novel, "Nightmare" was dedicated to a fellow teacher and friend of mine. Mrs. Nixon would spend a great deal of time researching her novels. She also was a frequent visitor to schools, where she would encourage students to become writers.

My favorite Nixon mystery was "Whispers From The Dead." It's the story of a teen, Sarah, who nearly drowns. After her near-death experience, she feels the presence of someone near her. Her family soon moves to Houston where her father brags about the incredible deal he got on the house's purchase. The reason they got the incredible deal was that, unbeknownst to the father, there had been a brutal murder in that house. Sarah soon starts to hear the voice of the woman who had been murdered there. The dead woman pleads with Sarah to bring her murderer to justice. You'll have to read the book to find out the ending.

The cache is a camoed pill bottle, place, appropriately enough, in an old cemetery. There is a pencil, but who knows how long that will last. Please replace the cache as you found it for future cachers. Remember, this is a cemetery so please respect the hallowed grounds. In spite of its location, no ghost writing allowed. Sorry!

As you look for the cache, you may hear a noise somewhere behind you. Was it just the wind rustling the leaves? Was it a small animal anxiously scurrying to its warm burrow? Or was it... whispers from the dead!

4-17-11: This cache was chosen 2010 Best Urban Cache by the Houston Area Geocachers.
