Geocache Description:

-The War Dog-

Parking can be tough in the area. There is a very small drive just to the south of GZ (near the fire hydrant). I would suggest parking in the sub-division to the north and walking along the sidewalk.

****Congratulations to AAA of MichigAn on the FTF!****

This article was on whmi.com today. 11/14/11 -A unique memorial that pays tribute to some unsung heroes will be dedicated this weekend in Lyon Township. A number of veteran’s organizations, volunteers and community members have been working to restore the War Dog Memorial located at the corner of Milford Road and 11 Mile. The one-and-a -half acre site fell into disrepair over the years US Army veteran Phil Weitlauf served in Vietnam and spearheaded the project. He says there are around 650 graves at the memorial and when they first started work, you couldn’t see it and wouldn’t even know it was there. Internment ceased in 1985 and no one maintained it after that so he says there was basically 35 years of growth to deal with but volunteers came out of the woodwork to assist with cleaning it up. Weitlauf says the site was originally a established in 1932 pet cemetery by a veterinarian from Highland Park but a monument later went up in 1946 after individuals became aware of all the war dogs had done, telling WHMI that military records confirm 15,000 serviceman were saved by the dogs during World War II alone. One of the dogs buried at the memorial includes Sgt. Sparks, a Doberman Pincher that fought with U.S. Marines at Guadalcanal. Weitlauf said he received several citations for bravery. Saturday’s War Dog Memorial dedication begins at 11am and the public is invited to attend the ceremony. It will include a flag line and flag raising along with a presentation on the dedicated service members known as war dogs. (JK)
