Willington Power Station was once a major employer to the village
of Willington and the surrounding area.
I grew up in the shadow of the power station with pylons at the
foot of my parents garden - yes you really could light fluorescent
tubes just by standing beneath the cables.
My memories growing up of the Power Station was that it always
featured in the village with annual open days, movie nights every
month showing the latest films in the club house, the bonfire night
firework displays in the grounds opposite and massive Christmas
parties with presents for everyone.
All that's left now is the five cooling towers with the rest of
the site flattened waiting for planning permission to be granted
for housing.
Its a shame to see it in this state and a little bit spooky
looking though those gates!!
