Geocache Description:

During the 17th and 18th centuries the Island of Saint Marie became a popular base for pirates, mainly because it was near major shipping routes but also because it had lots of bays and creeks which provided protection as well as ample fresh water and a steady supply of fresh fruits. Over the years many famous pirates like William Kidd, Thomas Tew and The Buzzard called Ile aux Forbans home. Today all that remains of the pirate settlement is the cemetery on a little hill overlooking the bay where the pirates once anchored their ships.

It is easy to get to the cache site as it is one of the main tourist attractions of Saint Marie. To get to the cache you’ll have to travel on the main (only) road that runs the length of the island until you get to S17 00.520 E49 50.523 where you will find a sign for “Cimetiere des Pirates”. You’ll have to park your car, scooter or bicycle here.

Near the sign you’ll find a hut where you can pay your entrance fees. The cost for 2 people (including a guide) is 20 000 Ariary (± $10US)

Most guides can only speak French so be sure that you insist on getting a guide that can speak English as well.

From the “office” you’ll walk for about 600m before you have to cross some water at S17 00.765 E49 50.713. It is fairly easy to cross during low-tide but be careful not to slip on the rocks. (The guides will take you via boat during high-tide)

After crossing the water, carry on for a short distance until you get to the next “Cimetiere des Pirate” sign at S17 00.797 E49 50.749. Keep left.
