At 6,100 feet, this mountain top provides a 360° panoramic view of the surrounding area -- Pine, Strawberry Mountain, Walnut Canyon and, on a clear day, Four Peaks. Although the mountain has no official name, some locals call it Pine Knob; others, Coyote Ridge. We named it Bear Mountain because twice we’ve encountered Black Bear near the top along the trail, and often we see bear tracks on the trail. It could also be called Rattlesnake Mountain as we’ve encountered them too. So Beware!
Limited parking is available at the Hardscrabble Trailhead on Hardscrabble Mesa Rd in Pine, AZ. DON'T FOLLOW DRIVING DIRECTIONS! Instead, in Pine, take Hardscrabble Mesa Rd west approximately 1.9 miles to the Hardscrabble TH at N 34° 22.289 W 111° 28.780. There is no official trail to the top of this mountain – just faint game trails. Bushwhacking, following your GPS to GZ, is possible. But we don’t recommend it. We suggest first finding the multi-cache, Teddy’s Hideout GC22T5H. Look inside this cache for additional waypoints. Then head towards Along Coyote Ridge GC23VNZ. Good Luck!
