Whitianga Cache. What happened here long ago?
The cache hidden here is in a very quiet part of Whitianga. You will find a 600ml container
The ruins here are of a Stone Storehouse, built in the 1870's as a dairy and storehouse for milk and farm products.
The nearby rock is called 'Lovers Rock' or Toumuia in Maori, a well known night spot for 'friendly' couples. The rock is also the location of a inter-tribal Maori massacre so nasty that the water in nearby Back Bay went red with blood as a marauding tribe, newly armed with muskets, picked off the fleeing locals. Hundreds were killed.
Have a explore around the reserve, there is much to be seen. This cache maybe turned into a multi at a later date.
This cache can be walked right up to, but due to the rocks and tall trees, your GPS may prove to be less than helpful. There is a nearby house so use your geocaching stealth skills, however you should not be out of place here as there is plenty to explore so you will blend in. Coordinates are way-point averaged.
