This is a fine example of the style of many barns found in this area. The barn was built in the late 1850s. The Cares were a prominent family of workers at Hopewell Furnace. Family members often held specialized positions such as moulder and supervisory positions such as founder. The founder oversaw furnace operations and supervised cast house workers. They were the highest paid workers at the furnace and in the 1850s made about $480/year.
There is no need to search on or in the barn. Go to the listed coordinates. If you are standing in front of the barn, you are on the old main road into the village. If you were here 150 years ago you might have walked down this road every morning on your way to work. If you weren't one of the Cares you might be a top of the scale carpenter on your way to a 12 hour shift for $0.65 per day, or an experienced teamster working for $14 per month. The cache should be easy to see if you are in the right spot. This cache is in a National Historical Site. There is no hunting, and no biking allowed. Visit during the normal operating hours of 9-5. Park only in one of the designated spots listed below. Please be respectful of your environment. This cache has been approved by the Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site.
