Glenbrook Gorge, a beautiful part of the world that so few tend to
come to, which is a real pity as the walking track along the river
is mildly undulating with the odd tree to step over but is
otherwise well defined and easy, it is not even really that far,
around 1.2km's from Lapstone place where you park your
car.
Glenbrook Creek is a beautiful spot to go for a swim as well, it is
so cool and inviting, so is worth a dip after the hot climb up to
the cache.
So, this is the older cache "The Gorge" that has been moved and
reborn, I was never really happy with where it was before, it was a
mild challenge, but now even more so, the challenge has been raised
by a notch or two.
I do NOT recommend taking kids to GZ at all!! let them stay
down below and go for a swim while you work up a thirst getting to
GZ.
The cache is now located in a large overhang, once in the overhang,
it is reasonably safe, slip and go over the edge, and yeah, it's
gunna hurt, or maybe even kill you, it's a long drop down. Don't
attempt it if you are not surefooted at scrambling, there is a lot
of loose leaves underfoot on the way to this cache and you will be
using whatever is around as hand holds.
The co-ords above were averaged at the mouth of the overhang for
quite some time, but when I plot it in Google Earth, it puts it
down in the creek, so I will give a "probable best" set of
alternates based on manually plotting a point in Google Earth.
Remember, it is not on the National park side of the creek, it is
not at creek level, it is quite a ways up from the creek.
Make you way up from the creek into a large overhang, then work
your way to the west around the corner to the next overhang which
is your destination. There is only one way as far as I can see to
this overhang, it is slippery and narrow and again, if you are not
comfortable with this sort of caching, don't attempt it!! A smiley
is not worth a trip to hospital if you screw up.
The Views from GZ are rather nice and you should be pretty well
hidden from below, though you can easily see the creek. The cache
is the same original Gorge, minus the used log pages. This means
the log book is only half size so could the first finder take a
spare logbook please.
If you choose to challenge yourself, you will enjoy the experience
and the location, take plenty of water for the journey, go for a
swim, take some photos. Please tilt the large flat rock back in
front of the cache to hide it, the cache does fit a fair way back
in if you are careful. Don't break that rock, it took me ages to
find one that big and I had to lug that up here from down
below.
Last time I am saying it: This is not a city slickers
drive-by! This is a Mountains cache with a real challenge and a
possibility that you can get hurt if you slip or screw up, don't
take kids to this one, don't attempt this at night, or, if you are
uncomfortable doing scrambles or if you are more inclined to walk
10 feet from the car to get a cache! Seriously, this cache is not
for you.
