Geocache Description:

In its heyday, the State Coal Mine was a bustling network of tunnels, filled with men and pit ponies, dust and dim lights. Deep below the surface, miners toiled to dig the valuable black coal which powered Victoria's railway network. The mine was Wonthaggi's life-blood, and was active from 1909 to 1968.

The K class was a branch line steam locomotive that ran on Victorian Railways from 1922 to 1979. Although its design was entirely conventional and its specifications unremarkable, the K class was in practice a remarkably versatile and dependable locomotive. It went on to outlast every other class of steam locomotive in regular service on the VR, and no fewer than 21 examples of the 53 originally built have survived into preservation.

Between 1922 and 1946, 53 K Classes were built at Newport Workshops. K192 was the last to be constructed, adding to its significance. Few alterations were made to the original K Class design, it proving to be a sound template.

K192 entered service in 1946. It was allocated to the North Melbourne Depot and also served at Traralgon and Ararat. After a relatively short service life of eleven years and 405,000 kms, K192 was “stored serviceable” in 1957, undertaking limited duties for another eleven years. In 1968 it was removed from the rolling stock register ready for disposal.

This particular K Class is of historical significance to this area because as it was built in Victoria and burnt Wonthaggi coal as it’s fuel. It had been placed in Apex Park, Wonthaggi from 1968 to 1998, where it carried the identity K 170. In 1998 it was moved to the State Mine Museum, Wonthaggi, where it has since been returned to its original number K 192 and cosmetically restored including new boiler clothing and repainting.

This is a more appropriate home because the Wonthaggi mines existed to supply coal to the Victorian Railways and this actual mine was run by the Victorian Railways.
