Big Daddy's thrives as lush city garden

EMERYVILLE -- When Big Daddy's Complete Rejuvenating Auto Detailing Shop in Emeryville burned down several years ago, no one could have expected its legacy would live on as a community garden.

After seeing the blighted lot on Peralta Street and West MacArthur Boulevard from her home across the street, Emeryville sculptor and gardener Vickie Jo Sowell asked the City Council to turn it into a community garden.

"It was an act of optimism to beautify a blighted area," she said. "Anytime you make something a little more humane, it makes things pretty."

When it opened last June, the garden was named Big Daddy's Complete Rejuvenating Community Garden in honor of the former occupant. Its purpose is to give people without yards a place to grow plants.

"Everyone lives in an apartment and this gives them a garden to share," said Sowell, who serves as the manager.

Instead of cars and mechanics on a cement floor, the area is covered in compost with 20 4-by-8-foot garden boxes with a variety of plants, ranging from cauliflowers and raspberries to daffodils and rosemary.

Other plants include cilantro, lemon grass and curly mustard green. Sam Foushee, manager of the community garden at 59th and Doyle streets and coordinator of Emeryville Community Organic Gardens, said it's important to have different plants in a garden.

"Our goal is to have enough diversity in plants that you'll attract good and bad bugs," he said. "That's the way nature operates. You need good plants to get good bugs."
