GILLIGAN’S ISLAND (see link (visit link)

Gilligan’s Island is an American TV sitcom “classic” that aired for 3 seasons, 1964-1967 (98 episodes & 3 TV movie sequels). The premise of the show is the two-man crew (first-mate Gilligan & Skipper) of the charter boat S.S. Minnow and 5 passengers (millionaire Thurston Howell III, his wife Eunice “Lovey” Wentworth Howell, movie star Ginger Grant, “The Professor” Roy Hinkley, and Mary Ann Summers) on a “three hour tour” run into a tropical storm and are shipwrecked on an uncharted, uninhabited island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. The show followed the comic adventures of the 7 castaways as they attempted to survive and ultimately escape from the island.

Enjoying solid ratings during its original run, the show grew in popularity during decades of syndication. Today, the title character of Gilligan is widely recognized as a comedic American pop culture icon. Way to go, “little buddy”!

The pilot episode was never broadcast, because of casting changes and restructuring of characters. The last episode of the show, “Gilligan the Goddess”, aired on 17 April 1967, and ended just like the rest, with the castaways still stranded on the island. It was not known at the time that it was the last episode, as a fourth season was expected, but never happened.

GILLIGAN & THE MINNOW

Bob Denver (formerly the lovable beatnik Maynard G. Krebs in "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis") was cast as Gilligan, the bumbling, dimwitted, accident-prone crewman of the S.S. Minnow. Denver was not the first choice to play Gilligan; actor Jerry Van Dyke was offered the role but turned it down in favor of the bomb, "My Mother the Car". Like predecessors "Columbo" and "MacGyver", none of the show's episodes ever specified Gilligan's full name, nor clearly indicated whether "Gilligan" was the character's first name or his last.

Four different boats played the part of the S.S. Minnow. The "Minnow" got its name in an ironic joke. It was named for Newton Minow, chairman of the U.S. FCC Federal Communications Commission), who was famous for describing television as "a vast wasteland". Obviously a man ahead of his times!

Holman Island can be reached by an easy paddle during the summer months, or in the winter by walking across the ice or snowmobiling, with the safest and recommended departure point near MacCallum’s Point past Lower Bedeque (Reference Point #1). Mosquito repellant and appropriate clothing are required during the spring and summer, and snowshoes are required during the winter. There are no facilities on the island, so food, water, a first aid kit and a cell-phone are recommended.
