(CHandler Urban Micro Project) - The Paseo Vista Recreational Area is Chandler's newest park and is the second highest point in town. The views of the surrounding mountains are impressive.
The park was built on top of a former landfill that closed in 2005. Construction was paid for with bond sales approved by voters in 2004. Sitting atop 2.2 million tons of landfill trash, The Paseo Vista Recreational Area features an archery range, disc golf course, dog park, a spiderweb jungle gym, and jogging paths.
There are methane venting stations throughout the park and no smoking signs are posted for obvious reasons. The trash buried 38 feet below the surface continues to decompose and shift the upper level by imperceptible amounts that prohibited the city from building any hard-court surfaces such as basketball or tennis courts.
Another famous park built atop a landfill is Flushing Meadows in New York, home of the US Open tennis tournament every year.
