Geocache Description:

Click to see hornets in action.

This cache series celebrates the diversity of wildlife Connecticut has to offer. One way to characterize Connecticut wildlife is how it copes with winter. These include migrating, taking a catnap, hibernating, to torpor or continue to remain active.

The baldfaced hornet is considered one of the Connecticut Hibernators. In the fall, males and new queens are produced. They leave the nest, mate and the fertilized queens hibernate. The new queens usually stay underground or in hollow trees until spring's thaw. The remainder of the workers, the old queen and the males die of old age or freezing temperatures. The paper-like nest itself is abandoned by winter and is not reused. The coordinates for an old hornets nest are listed below. You just may see a bird or two enter the nest looking for food. Take time to enjoy the hornets’ work; please, do not disturb the nest so others may enjoy.
