This is NOT one of the beautiful touristic islands, this is real life, so be prepared to experience the "other" side of the Maldives, a "normal" island with litter and... ...yes, hurray, a geocache!
THE CACHE: As a tribute to the wonderful islands of the Maldives this cache lies about 600 meters (a 10 minutes walk) north of the airport terminal. It is accessible via the only road parallel to the runway. When exiting the terminal, just take it right along the harbour. Here you might witness staff loading/unloading goods and food for touristic islands.
This cache has a long history since it's been placed in 2010. Due to deteriorating ground it needed to be moved to safer spots several times and in 2015 finally has been placed within the premises of the Hulhule Hotel to facilitate a safe hiding spot with 24/7 access.
HUNTING CONSIDERATIONS: You can see the Hulhule Hotel on the other side of the harbour basin (this way you might want to estimate the distance/time yourself and if you're going to make it before departure or not - a real cacher will always make it
.
You might as well take the free hotel shuttle bus.
At arrival you probably won't have enough time as the tour operators will take you to your hotel transportation right away. For most of you the best will be to go there prior departure. Fellow cachers state it should be done BEFORE check-in, as it is difficult to get back through security.
THE WAY TO THE HIDE: Enter the hotel premises through the main gate (if you come by shuttle bus you'll be dropped infront of the entrance). Now you have two options:
1. Go through the main entrance, continue straight through the lobby and exit into the garden (if unsure, ask for the way to the beach). Turn left to the beach. Cross the beach and go to the wooden boat on the jetty behind the beach (lighted during nighttime.
2. Turn left PRIOR to the entrance and enter the hotel garden. Stroll straight ahead as far as you can and turn right to go around the building. Cross the beach and go to the wooden boat on the jetty behind the beach (lighted during nighttime.
The HIDE: The box is inside the boat under a loose plank (board) on the aft right side. Please check the spoiler picture to avoid extensive searching and attracting attention. The hotel staff is not aware of the cache. So if you should happen to be noticed and asked, tell them the true story and ask them kindly to not remove the cache ("one of the airline crew members has placed it" might help).
By the way, this is the place where ships deliver the fuel for the airport, so chances are good you'll find one close to the cache unloading kerosine.
Feel free to post your favourite photos of your Maldives stopover!
Small note on cache maintenance: I am here frequently for business, so maintenance should not be a problem.
DEUTSCH
Cache history:
UPDATE Dec 2015: Moved cache onto the premises of the Hulhule hotel as ground has been remodeled. Now T1.5 and D1.5
UPDATE Sept 2013: Moved cache to safer spot. Thus decreased T rating from 4 to 3. Please HIDE WELL after logging as it's easier to spot by muggles now
UPDATE July 2013: *WARNING*The site of the cache is deteriorating due to massive erosion and is very dangerous now!!! Fellow cachers reported sinking into holes and mud and getting hurt.
UPDATE June 2011: The cache had been muggled twice during one year. So this is the third location and I hope it will last longer here! Please help keeping this cache alive and be as stealthy as you can. Very easy though: Be a tourist with a camera...
