First cache in a series. THIS CACHE IS NOT WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE.
Cache is located on “County Line Road”, near a future leg of Rails to Trails—formerly a portion of the Texas and Pacific Railway. County Line Road is edged by Lamar County on the west and Red River County on the east, thus truly placing it on the county line. Log only cache, BYOP.
Congratulations, MCcbMavericks, FTF!
Present day Red River County covers approximately 1,054 square miles of northeast Texas. Red River County is separated from Oklahoma by the Red River and Arkansas by Bowie County. To the west you will find Lamar County and the southern border is formed by the Sulphur River. The county seat is Clarksville, established in 1836.
In the beginning, Red River County was much larger—approximately 350 miles east to west and 50 to 100 miles north to south. During the first Congress of the Republic of Texas, the Red River district was a vaguely defined area covering all or part of 39 present day counties. On December 14, 1837, an act signed by President Sam Houston divided the Red River District into two counties—Red River and Fannin. This act also established the Red River as the northern border of the county. Though now smaller, Red River County still included all or part of present day Lamar, Hopkins, Delta, Franklin, Titus, Morris, Cass, Marion, and Bowie counties. Approximately three years later, Red River County was further divided to create Lamar County to the west and Bowie County to the east, the remainder of the 39 counties came later from these three divisions.
Please be sure to tighten thoroughly when replacing to keep the log dry(and don't crossthread). Thanx!
**NOTE: This is a replacement cache as the original became the unfortunate victim of a chainsaw "accident"; new terrain and difficulty ratings, as well as new coordinates. Happy caching!**
