Ebenezer Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

bluedoberman: Well, this area appears to be inaccessible. While it has one of the neater cemeteries in the area, it is also a spot for frequent dumping. The city of Arlington has put up a fence to prevent access from the lake, the field there is privately owned, and now the road is blocked by a gate. I suspect it was put up by the church that manages the cemetery. While you could technically walk back to the spot, I am not recommending it. I don't think I will be able get this one back-up. If I manage some miracle, i will just re-create it. I hope those who made it here enjoyed it.

Geocache Description:

A nice easy small-regular sized cache that can handle a few items. I increased the size once confirming the street is accessible. This cemetery has some amazing views of the surrounding area.
This is an old African American cemetery with some interesting write ups. The only entrance is down the way on Pioneer Parkway. Late 2007, some updates were done to the facility. It is nicely fenced and appears well maintained.

My contact with the local gas company confirmed it is an open public road to the front of the cemetery. If you do not wish to try the long bumpy dirt road, you can still pull over on Pioneer and take the long trek up the hill. I have had no problems going down Arkansas lane in my little sedan, though. I moved the size up to a small plastic container. I put in a travel bug and some swag from the National Scientific Balloon Facility. Feel free to just take any of the Scientific Balloon facility stuff. Any other swag is regular trade items.

Here is some of the interesting history about this cemetery. It is a nice little cemetery associated with another cemetery down the road. Enjoy this nice cemetery overlooking much of the area. It has some great scenery.

Here are some excerpts I have pasted about the cemetery:
EBENEZER (HANDLEY HILL COLORED) CEMETERY - On the west side of the Lake Arlington Dam lies an old African-American Cemetery. It contains about 600 graves, but only 100 have markers of any sort. This cemetery, sponsored by the Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, is located behind the barrier blocking the dam to public access.
This is an African-American cemetery that sits atop a hill, not much more than a hundred yards northwest of the west end of the Lake Arlington dam. It appears to be about 4 or 5 acres in size and gets occasional maintenance. The earliest burial, according to the headstones, was in 1902 and the most recent in 1968.

The gate is about 50 feet north of an old section of Arkansas Lane that has been closed to automobile traffic for about 30 years. The road once crossed the dam and crossed through the countryside along the southern edge of Arlington. Some say that this stretch was closed due to cars running off the narrow road into the lake.

Congratulations to texaslibra for FTF!!
