“CAN YOU TURN THIS INTO A CACHE?” CONTEST/EXCHANGE IN HONOR OF SWSEC

We're always recognizing people for "finding"..... but how about for "hiding," huh?

This bit of fun is in honor of West Alabama’s most prolific hider, SWSEC. To date, he has hidden over 330 caches AND COUNTING!!! I think he is #1 in Alabama!

Amazing how clever some of the containers he comes up with are, isn’t it? Doesn’t it just make you smile (or groan) when you find one of his “one-of-a-kind” creations? He’s an inspiration to us all. And so, in his honor, we introduce “Can You Turn This Into a Cache?”

Got an old White Elephant in your attic or closet that you just don’t know what to do with but can’t bear to throw away? Ever stumbled upon a really unique piece of trash/treasure along the trail while caching or cruising down a country road? Ever seen some piece of junk at a yard sale/thrift store and wondered what it could possibly be used for? Ever thought, “HEY, THAT WOULD MAKE A TERRIFIC CACHE!?” Me too!

So here’s how this will work. If you want to participate in this contest/exchange, please bring a ”white elephant” that you think somebody might be able to turn into a cache. Don't make it into a cache yourself. Just consider it "raw materials" or "creative camo." Whoever ends up with it will face the challenge of how how to "turn it into a cache." Don’t wrap it. We’ll put them all in a big pile, and then draw numbers to distribute them in Chinese Gift Exchange style. Additionally, if you have a special something that you think would be just perfect for a certain cacher you know (for example, say it just SCREAMS “Earl B. Fisk!!!”) bring it along too and you can present it to that cacher personally.

Prizes will be awarded in various categories depending on what kind of white elephants show up. Potential categories include Most Beautiful, Most Shocking, Funniest, Ugliest, Creepiest, etc.

We all love to get the numbers. But remember, we can't find 'em if you don't hide 'em (and vice-versa). Let's all get out there and hide these ugly puppies!

INAUGURATION OF TUSCALOOSA'S FIRST TRUE POWER TRAIL and A FTF FRENZY

TWO (that's right, two, 2, dos) POWER TRAILS WILL MAKE THEIR DEBUT. One has 30 caches on it, the other has 21.

What’s a power trail? It’s a string of caches every 500 feet or so that stretches for miles until the hider runs out of either containers or road. And there's A LOT OF ROAD in Tuscaloosa county. In other words, LOTS OF CACHES! It’s all the new rage in the Geocaching world, and is a great way to pile up the numbers FAST! T-town will now have its very own!

And everyone who comes to the event will have a chance at being first to find (FTF)!!! along the power trail as well as several other new caches placed on the day of this event.

So here’s how this will work. We will ask the reviewer not to publish any of these caches until the day after the event. The only way to get the coordinates before the caches are published (thus having a chance at FTF) is to attend the event.

Close to noon, a list of these caches along with their descriptions and coordinates will be handed out. We will have 2 laptops loaded with the entire list in GSAK to be transferred into your GPS devices (if you need a special cable, please bring it, though we will have some available). And then away we will all go on a FTF Frenzy! But remember, in the words of Sgt. Phil Esterhaus from Hill Street Blues, “Let’s be careful out there.”

**************

Crossing our fingers, hoping for good weather, and extending an invitation to caching friends (the ones we already know and the ones we haven't met yet) from far and wide to join us in a day of geocaching fellowship and fun. The more the merrier!
