Der Forlenbuckel bei Ubstadt-Weiher (Ldkr. Karlsruhe)
Der Forlenbuckel liegt in der Nördlichen Oberrheinebene im Naturraum Hardtplatten, westlich der Gemeinde Ubstadt-Weiher. Durch eiszeitliche Verwehung von Flugsanden entstanden hier mehrere Binnendünen, von denen heute nur der Forlenbuckel noch existiert. Den Namen Forlenbuckel erhielt die Düne, aufgrund des auffälligen, inselartigen Bestands an Waldkiefern (Forlen, lat. Pinus sylvestris), inmitten einer Kulturlandschaft, die überwiegend aus Streuobstwiesen und kleinschlägiger Feldflur mit artenreicher Ackerbegleitvegetation besteht. Der bis zu 10m hohe Dünenrücken wurde in den 1950er Jahren abgeholzt und der feinkörnige Sand als Baumaterial abgetragen.
Erst Ende der 1980er Jahre erkannte man den tatsächlichen Wert dieses Bodendenkmals. Man begann mit der Sicherung und Unterschutzstellung des verbliebenen Dünenrests. Auf einer Fläche von rund 7.000 m² wurden etwa 10.000 Tonnen Sand wieder aufgehäuft und mit Baumaschinen modelliert. Die Arbeiten dazu übernahm das Landesamt für Flurneuordnung und Landesentwicklung in Zusammenarbeit mit der Gemeinde Ubstadt-Weiher.
Das heutige vielgestaltige Areal des Forlenbuckels mit seinen Hecken, Bäumen und Trockenrasen, bietet speziell trockenliebenden Tier- und Pflanzenarten einen wichtigen und selten gewordenen Lebensraum. Insbesondere die Flugsanddünen der Hardtplatten stellen für solche Lebensgemeinschaften einen Verbreitungsschwerpunkt in Baden-Württemberg dar. Gepflegt und betreut wird der Forlenbuckel durch den Verein der Vogelfreunde Weiher. Die Fläche ist für die Bevölkerung als Naherholungsgebiet frei zugänglich.

The Forlenbuckel lies in the northern Upper Rhine plain in the nature area Hardtplatten, to the west of the town Ubstadt-Weiher. Several Binnendünen on which today only of the Forlenbuckel still it exists originated from glacial drift of wind-borne sands here. The dune, on account of the remarkable, island-like continuance of forest pines (Forlen, lat. Pinus sylvestris), in the midst of a man-made landscape which exists predominantly of litter fruit meadows and little field hall with very varied field accompanying vegetation. The up to 10-m-high dune back was cleared in the 1950s and the fine-grained sand was used as a building material.
Only in the end of the 1980s one recognised the actual value of this ground monument. One began with the protection and unterprotective position of the remained dune rest. On a surface of about 7,000 m ² about 10,000 tonnes of sand were piled up again and modeled with construction machines. The regional authorities for hall reorganisation and land development took over the works in addition in cooperation with the town Ubstadt-Weiher.
The today's variform area of the Forlenbuckels with his hedges, trees and dry grasslands, offers especially to dry-loving animal species and botanical species an important and seldom become living space. In particular the wind-borne sand dunes of the Hardtplatten show a spreading main focus in Baden-Wurttemberg for such long-term relationships. Is maintained and is examined of the Forlenbuckel by the association of the bird's friends Weiher. The surface is freely accessible to the population as a greenbelt recreation area.
