Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
This is an EarthCache that will take you to two caves in Stone Oak Park. For safety reasons, people are not allowed to enter these caves; but you are able to get close enough to see the openings. The park is open from 7:30 am until sunset, 7 days a week.
Caves are nature's original water filters. They serve as a first filter for rainwater, straining out natural debris like rocks and branches, as well as litter left by humans. The water is then guided through the fine, natural filters of the cave's porous limestone and dolomite floors and walls. In turn, that cleaner water refills the underground aquifers. In the case of these two caves in Stone Oak Park, the aquifer that they help refill provides drinking water to more than 1.5 million people in the San Antonio area.
To log this EarthCache, first visit the cave at the above posted coordinates. Take a look at and read the info sign posted near the opening of the cave. Then, head over to the other cave at N 29* 38.845 W 098* 28.211. Again, take a look at and read the info sign at this cave opening.
E-mail me the answers to the following three questions:
1. What is the name of the aquifer that these two caves help refill with water?
2. What is the name of the cave at the posted coordinates, and the name of the second cave at the listed waypoint?
3. Using the diagrams posted at each location (and assuming that the scale is the same for both of them), which of the two caves do you estimate to be the deeper of the two?
If you have a camera with you and care to post one of those cool pictures of you holding up your favorite GPS receiver near this EarthCache, then please do so. However, this will be a purely optional requirement for completing this EarthCache.
Please remember to stay safe, obey the nearby signs, and stay out of the caves.
