Geocache Description:

The listed coordinates will bring you to the Lower Sulphur Springs Cemetery which contains several burials of men who fought in the Civil War. For this cache, we will concentrate on Charles Wesley Warren.

You will first need to locate the grave marker of Charles Wesley Warren. Warren was a Private in Company I and/or D of the Sixth Alabama Infantry Regiment. The Sixth Alabama Infantry mustered 2,109 men during the Civil War; of these, almost 400 were killed and 243 died of disease. The regiment was organized May 6, 1861 at Montgomery with 12 companies and 1,400 men and Commanded by Colonel John J. Seibels. They saw their first action on July 21 at the Battle of Manassas (Bull Run) and were involved in 17 additional battles before the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse April 9, 1865. The regiment surrendered 4 officers and 80 men under Lt. Colonel Culver.

According to this National Park Service website, there is a distinct difference between cemetery headstones provided for soldiers who fought for the Confederacy and those who fought for the Union. The headstone was the same size and material as those for Union soldiers, except the top was pointed instead of rounded, and the U.S. shield was omitted.

This website at the US Department of Veterans affairs tells us of another possible reason for the Confederate marker's distinct shape. Apocryphally, it has been said that the pointed top was adopted to prevent "Yankees" from sitting on Confederate headstones.

The inscriptions on Warren's grave marker match the historical record of his service to the Confederate States of America. However, the marker is not pointed on top. In an apparent contradiction to the published description of CSA markers, his marker top is rounded.

To locate the final container, step off AB paces from Warren's marker at a bearing of C degrees, where:
A is the number of letters in the first word on the seventh line of his marker,
B is the second number in the day of his first battle, and
C is his age at death plus the number of letters in the first word on the third line of his marker.

Please email me if there are any issues. Enjoy!
