The Crossways in Hilton has been a watering point for over 130 years, used by the Voortrekkers and early settlers as they laboured up the hill in Ox Wagons from Pietermaritzburg nearly 400m below and 10km away. It took them all day to get this far and were probably very thirsty at this point. Since 1913, for over 120 years, it has been a been a public house, or pub, and anyone finding this cache is encouraged to enjoy the view from the veranda over Hilton towards the Quarry and the distant Karkloof and perhaps enjoy the local brew.
