During the 1810s and 1820s the Kangaroo island population was largely itinerant. A population of around 200 temporary residents gathered seal skins. Those who had chosen to settle here made this, according to some sources, the most lawless spot in the British Empire. Whaler and sealer Nathanial Thomas arrived some time in the mid 1820’s with Aboriginal women taken from Tasmania and from the near-by mainland. By 1827 he had built a cottage at Antechamber Bay that remains the oldest house in South Australia. One of the Tasmanian women Betty had three children by Nat. The eldest, Mary, is commemorated as the first child born on Kangaroo Island in modern history. All this occurred many years before the arrival of the South Australian Company.
A stroll along the 3 km of pristine beach will reveal the splendours of Antechamber Bay with spectacular views across Backstairs Passage to the mainland and The Pages islands.
The cache is located on the banks of the Chapman River near one of two camp grounds. The cache should be available at all times. Be aware of snakes in the area. On the day we placed the cache there was dead tiger near Betty’s marker. There were also two dry skins in the location I first selected for the cache 100m south of GZ.
There are also five points of interest presented with the cache.
Memorial – Stone and plaque commemorating Betty
Graves – Two graves and a very old pepper tree
Penguins – Fairy penguin rookery at the west end of the bay
Jetty – Remains of a jetty at the east end of the bay.
Cottage – Nat’s Homestead (now a B&B)
