This is a two-part multi-cache in a quaint shopping center in West
St. Louis County with a short walk from the published coordinates
to the cache. Projecting waypoints is required. Bring your own
pen.
An Idiot Savant is a person who is mentally retarded in general but
who displays remarkable aptitude in some limited field such as
Geocaching. There are very few Idiot Savants in the world so all of
us have IQs somewhere between the extremes. This cache will help
you determine your Geocaching IQ.
To log this cache follow the procedure described below.
1. Go to waypoint 1, the coordinates at the top of this page, and
find a large green object with a five-digit number on it with
yellow numerals on a black background. Call the number N.
2. Let A be a number comprised of the left two digits of N and B a
number comprised of the right two digits of N.
3. Let C be the left digit of the number A and D be the left digit
of the number B.
4. Add all of the digits of A and B and call the sum E.
Example, if N were to equal 12345
(it does not) then A=12, B=45, C=1, D=4 and E=12
5. Compute X, a distance in statute miles (sm), as follows:
X = 3(A + B + 1) – 27(C + D
– 1) – 3E – 5
Example, for the above values of
A, B, C, D and E the value of X would equal 25 sm.
There are 5280 feet per statute mile
and it is not a nautical mile having 6076.115 feet.
6. Project from waypoint 1 at a true bearing of 090 degrees (due
east) for a distance of X sm and call the new coordinates waypoint

Example, for the above value of X
= 25 the projected coordinates of waypoint 2 would be:
N38° 36.392’ W090°

7. Find the cache coordinates by projecting back from waypoint 2 at
a true bearing of 270 degrees (due west) for the same distance of X
sm.

can do step 6 you can do this step.
8. Find the cache at the coordinates computed in step 7.
You can either do the projections on your GPS or use the Compute
lat/lon given radial and distance from a known point great
circle calculator found at: Great
Circle Calculator
Be sure to set the Distance Units to “sm” and the Earth
model to “Spherical (1’=1nm)”.
An idiot (Geocaching IQ less than 50) would search for the cache at
waypoint 1.
A person with normal intelligence (average Geocaching IQ of 100)
would go to waypoint 1, find the value of N, work through the
arithmetic then find the cache at the computed coordinates.
A savant (Geocaching IQ greater than 150) does not need the value
of N and would compute the cache coordinates from the armchair
without having to go to waypoint 1 by using only the information
provided on this cache-sheet then find the cache at the computed
coordinates.
A Geocaching Idiot Savant (Geocaching IQ greater than 250 because
he can do projections in his head) would go directly to the
cache.
