Geocache Description:

This cache is part of my ‘Remember……?’ series. I grew up in this area and decided to place caches at places that were special to me back in the day. All of the places are closed, gone, or rebuilt into something different. If you’ve been in this area since the mid-80s or so, you’ll probably remember these places. If you’re new to the area, then here’s some historical information for you! I’ve researched the history of the establishment that was at the location as best as possible, but since most of these places have been closed since before the internet was prominent; sometimes the information is tough to gather.

Anyway, hope you enjoy this cache and this series. If you remember any of the places in this series, please let us all know in your log. Thanks for searching for my caches!

Cobb Center was an open-air shopping mall that opened here in 1963 and closed in 1995. Cobb Center, having Rich’s as its main anchor, was popular until 1973, when larger closed-air Cumberland Mall opened with 4 anchors: Rich’s Davison, Sears and JCPenny. In response, Cobb Center reformatted to a closed-air mall and added another anchor, Grant City. Grant City closed in 1973 and was replaced with Kessler’s.

Eventually, the Cobb Center lost more business when because another mall (Town Center in Kennesaw) opened in 1986 and also had Rich’s as an anchor. In addition, the area around the mall suffered economic decline at the same time.

The mall was redesigned and renamed Four Seasons Mall to rebrand itself in the late 80s, but many of the stores remained vacant. By the 90s, Rich’s was changed to a discount store and Kessler’s closed with no replacement. The mall was demolished in 1995, expect for Rich’s, which closed in 2004.

Today, Publix has opened a store and the back lot is a soccer park. It is named Cobb Center (slight spelling change) and Imagine International Academy is scheduled to open a school here soon.

I remember shopping at the mall in the 80s. Kesslers was a favorite store of mine as a kid (they had a great toy section)!

Congrats to sigmanu1896, FTF!!! And to annamartin for 2nd place! ;-)
