RIR was a 3.3 mile road course race track used by NASCAR, SCORE, Formula 1, & SCCA. It operated from 1957 to 1989. It was known as a relatively dangerous course, with its long, downhill back straightaway and brake-destroying, 180-degree Turn 9 at the end. During the first weekend of races in September 1957, one of the competitors lost his life. In 1965 the great AJ Foyt suffered a brake failure in his NASCAR racecar at the end of the long straightaway, going end-over-end at high speed. Crash crews assumed Foyt was dead at the scene, until fellow driver Parnelli Jones noticed a twitch of movement. In 1989, SCORE held the track's last race which ended the way the track started: with a dead racer. RIR finally closed its gates after 32 years of racing. In 2005, the sole remaining remnant of the track vanished when the old Administration Building was torn down to make way for townhomes.

I can remember sitting in the stands during the 1970's at Turns 7 & 8 (Lowe's is now right on top of Turn 7) watching the racers straighten out the 'eses' by making shortcuts through the dirt. During the mid 80's I lived 1/2 mile directly north of the track above the 60 Freeway. If I wasn't attending the races, I was sitting on my patio on Sunday afternoons listening to the sound of the race cars & visualizing in my mind them sliding through the corners before hitting maximum RPMs & top speed down the long backstretch.

Some call the devlopment of the Moreno Valley Mall progress, I call it a shame. As Willy & I were searching for the ideal location to plant our cache, we noticed many empty stores & buildings. Even the multi-level parking garage was blocked off so that no one could enter it. So what's better, a large under-utilized shopping center or a dusty old race track? I think you know my vote.
