Geocache Description:

Cache is a camo-taped lock & lock type container, on the large side of small, as it holds quite a few smaller trade items, and can also accomodate some trackables. I have included a hand-crafted rainbow-bead-glass-star suncatcher for the First to Find. (photo in gallery)

This is part of my “Learn About Kurten” (and surrounding area) series of caches. The histories of Tryon and Kurten are intertwined. This cache is in Tryon Cemetery, where several of my kinfolk and ancestors are buried. There was originally a Baptist church nearby which was established in 1857 and named for Reverend William M. Tryon, a Baptist circuit rider and veteran of the Texas revolution who died in 1847. When the Cedar Creek Masonic Lodge No. 300 built a 2-story log building, the congregation had to use the first floor for services because the original church was then too small. Tryon Church moved to Kurten in 1912 and was disbanded in 1945. The Masonic Lodge moved to Kurten in 1902, but the building in Tryon was sold to the First Methodist Church in Bryan for $100. Not far inside the gate is the grave of Maggie E. Kelley. She taught school in Kurten from 1917 to 1962, and is remembered fondly by all who were her students. Original trade contents of cache include many small goodies, from metal charms to keychains, lapel pins, tiny toys, and a small compass. Location is down a short gravel & dirt lane off the paved country road. You must walk into the cemetery, which is enclosed in a chain-link fence. Gate is never locked. Area is usually kept mowed, but may get overgrown with tall grass if there has been a lot of rain. As always in the country, keep an eye out for snakes, since there are woods and a creek outside the fence nearby. If you happen to have your doggy caching companion with you it would be ok to let him run here while you look, but please do respect the residents and those who may come to visit them, and clean up after your pet, if necessary. Congratulations to JBStinkbottom&Crew for the FTF!
