I was listening to the oldies station the other day when I heard them playing the Bryan Adams song "Summer of 69." It got me thinking about my own band from when I was a kid growing up in Florida called The Blowhards. OK, it's a goofy name, but the lead singer Dean Johnson was in debate club and he picked the name. He ended up being a lawyer, made tons of money and then retired early to live in Cancun. Figures.
Our lead guitarist was Lenny Jacobsen. He loved his guitar more than his mother. You'd think with that kind of dedication, he could really wail. Unfortunately not. He wasn't really that bad, but his dedication was kind of hard to ignore. Plus his sister Alicia was really good looking and to a bunch of young 20-year old boys that was a real plus. We let her sing backup vocals on some of our gigs -- she wasn't bad as a singer either. They ended up opening a BBQ joint chain together with restaurants spread from the Virgin Islands to Texas.
The bass player was Bob Suggs. He didn't talk much, but he had this weird grin that he'd flash whenever he was happy that just kind of creeped me out. I think he's working in a Ford garage in North Carolina the last I heard.
Stan Vierra was our drummer. I didn't really know him since he was brought in to the band by his cousin Andrew (our other guitarist) and didn't go to the same school as the rest of us. I have no idea where these guys ended up. They moved to Miami and I never heard from them after that although I head a rumor that Stan went back to Guatemala.
Mitch Harley was our sax player. He was a real ladies man and I think he spent more time chasing girls than learning the songs we were supposed to be playing. I never ever met a guy with so many pickup lines. He ended up living with one of the gals he was chasing down in Central America for awhile before they split up. He works for the Tampa water department these days.
The best player in the band was our keyboardist Dennis Kirkpatrick. He was really gifted and I think he was the only one of us with any real talent. If it wasn't for his mad piano man skills, nobody would ever have watched the rest of us. He's still playing solo gigs in Tallahassee working on the night club circuit there.
The Blowhards were kind of a mix punk/thrash band. We weren't really any good, but got a couple of gigs around the southeastern US. We never lasted anywhere, but did raise a few roofs and trashed a few towns as moved along. It was always kind of tough trying to keep enough gas in the car to get to another gig and eventually we all just kind of gave up and moved on.
