A butte is an elevated area of land with a flat top and sides
that are usually steep cliffs. It takes its name from its
characteristic shape.
There are several examples of these desert pinnacles in Saudi
Arabia, but this one is probably the most well known.
An easy off road drive in a 4X4 will get you to the pinnacle -
leave the tarmac at N24 32.257 E046 17.226 or if in a 2WD, turn at
N24 33.764 E046 12.694, follow the tarmac to N24 34.933 E046
12.910, then onto a well worn gravel track in the direction of the
pinnacle, you should be able to drive to within 1Km and then have
to walk in (across wadis).
To claim this earthcache you need to answer 3 questions, submit
the answers via e mail.
1. At the listed coordinates face the pinnacle and tell us
(a) the colour of the rocks in the pinnacle
(b) the colour of most of the rocks between you and the
pinnacle
2. How do you think this feature was formed?
3. What is the difference between a Butte and a Mesa?
