Well! This Market and cache has gone through several moves over
the years. From the old Maxwell St area to Canal St and finally
here.
This cache is a replacement for the archived cache by the same
name GCRAD7.
The Music!
For decades, one of the best places to hear music on sidewalks
was Maxwell Street. Maxwell Street first was a major market place
and later famous for its blues music and street musicians, and
became an important part of black culture in the city.
Some of history's greatest blues musicians played for the crowds
who came looking for the strange, the amazing -and the sometimes
"hot"- bargains that were to be had in Chicago's world-famous
street market. And though there's another "Maxwell Street market"
on Canal Street, all it does is make one yearn for the raucous old
days.
As the redevelopment was in process I made one last pilgrimage
to get a sandwich and across the street the blues musicians we
holding a marathon blues session for several days straight.
The place was magic indeed. :)
