Geocache Description:

Welcome to Bardstown. This cache is located in the center of Bardstown on the grounds of the old courthouse building which has been converted into the tourist and information center.

This building was built in 1892 as a courthouse for the county of Nelson. It was replacing one that was a total loss due to fire. It now houses the tourist and information center. A few years ago a new courthouse was built about two miles east of this location on Hwy 150. After finding this cache spend a little time looking, shopping and eating here in downtown Bardstown.

From the courthouse square to the west you will see the Old Talbott Tavern, built in 1779. It has been used as a stagecoach stop, hotel, restaurant, tavern. Come in and look around. See a little of this old buildings history. Next to the Talbott is the old Nelson County Jail that was in operation from 1819 till 1987. A new jail was built to replace this jail which is now a Bed & Breakfast. South and east of the courthouse square are many homes and shops that you will want to view. North of here is 3rd street. This is also called Hwy 150/31E. This is the main street of downtown with many shops to browse.

Inside this Tourist and Information Center you can pickup a visitor's guide and be sure to ask them about the Heaven Hill Trolley that will take you on a tour of the historic spots in Bardstown and stops at Heaven Hill distillery for a tour there. The tour trolley last about one hour and 15 minutes.

The first building to the north from the square,on your left is Hurst Drugs. I have many good memories sitting at one of their soda fountain stools and sipping a "Cherry cola", eating a chicken salad sandwich or licking on an ice cream cone. This is where my wife, then girlfriend worked as a "soda fountain jerk" in the 1970's. You can still go in, sit down and order that cherry cola. Their soda fountian is still in operation. You won't find to many soda fountains still serving the public today. Enjoy your time in Bardstown, Ky. Your looking for a film canister with log sheet only. Bring your own pen. There is a tupperware container at the info counter inside with swag items for trade for the kids of all ages. Just go in if they are open and ask, they know what you're doing. Good luck and have a great time while in Bardstown.
