The Dusi Canoe Marathon is a three day canoe duathlon (paddling and running), held annually in February starting just above stream of the Ernie Pearce Weir near Maritzburg College down the mighty Umsundusi River to the river's mouth near Durban. The tradition began in 1952; since then intrepid men and women from all over South Africa and the world have flocked to take part in this, one of the biggest of endurance river races in the world. From its small beginnings, when it took the world famous conservationist, Dr Ian Player, six long days to reach the coast, the race now has a well organised standard three day format with over 2000 paddlers taking part. All participants have to have some brain cells missing to be able to qualify for this incredibly grueling race with paddling and portage being the norm, sometimes in incredibly hot conditions.
