From this vantage point, you will have a spectacular view of
a
classic American roller coaster called Thunder Road (named
after
the 1958 movie of the same name). It first opened to the public
in
1976, and is still in operation today.
It is a classic wooden "out-and-back" racing coaster and
begins
in South Carolina, crosses into North Carolina before
returning
back. I believe this is the only park in the United States that can
make
this claim.
While other newer (and much smoother) coasters have been
built
in recent years, few have the same bone-shaking charm of
these
American classics.
Some interesting facts about the coaster:
- The original colors of the ride were Red, White, and
Blue.
- The first trains were brought from a defunct coaster in
Chicago, IL and were originally painted to resemble a
Sherriff's
car and a Hot Rod... you can guess which one was more
popular.
- The entrance first featured a set of moonshine stills to
set
the theme and were removed sometime later.
Congrats to Bamafan323 and david2400nc for the co-FTF! Enjoy the
view to a thrill!
