Geocache Description:

The remains of what is left of the old Gambleside Baptist Church

Gambleside Chapel was opened on Christmas Day 1839. This open air baptistry is all that remains, in a fairly intact state, of that chapel.

The construction was of dry stone walling lined with puddle clay to retain the water. Last used in the 1870's it was later extended to 2 its size to act in a new function of supplying water to the pump station just down the clough.

In the 1995 the baptistry was restored and the steps you see were built then.

The whole of this area is rich in history not only farming but coal-mining etc. Take time to read the information boards around the reservoir for more information.

Parking is readily available at Clow Bridge and the cache is about a 20 minute walk from the car park.At first the going is good on a well defined lane but is rough moorland for a few hundred yards after reaching the pumping station. Be careful on the feeder drain as it is very slippery.

The cache is not at the baptistry but is only a few hundred feet away up a small clough
